Jumpshot Example

Warning: The following example assumes that you have prior knowledge of X-forwarding over SSH and experience using MPI on Jazz. Please read the in depth documentation above if you encounter problems.

You can easily visualize your MPI calls using Jumpshot and the MPE libraries (already included with MPICH). Follow these simple instructions to create your first slog2 file which can be visualized using Jumpshot.

1. Compile your MPI code using the -mpilog flag.
   

   [dvorak@jlogin2 compile-dir]$ mpicc -mpilog *.c
   

2. Link and run your code as you normally would.
3. You should find a .clog file in your output directory
4. Make sure you have Jumpshot in your Softenv.

   [dvorak@jlogin2 MM5-intel-mpichg2-IA32]$ soft add +jumpshot
   [dvorak@jlogin2 MM5-intel-mpichg2-IA32]$ which jumpshot
   /soft/apps/packages/jumpshot-4/bin/jumpshot
   

5. Convert the .clog file to a .slog2 file using the file conversion utility.

   [dvorak@jlogin2 Run]$ clogTOslog2 mm5.mpp.clog >& /dev/null
   

6. Run Jumpshot on one of the login nodes:

   [dvorak@jlogin2 Run]$ jumpshot mm5.mpp.slog2
   

   

NOTE: Running X applications like Jumpshot over a network can yield poor performance. You may want to install Jumpshot locally and visualize your slog2 files on your local workstation.
