LCRC Computer Policy

Responsibilities In using your account in LCRC you agree to the following guidelines:

Anything that you do on these machines has an associated "lcrc.anl.gov" implied. For example, when sending e-mail or posting Usenet news, your address would be "user@lcrc.anl.gov", which to some some people will imply that it is an official message from the U.S. government. This does not mean that we "own" your work, or research, but that you have to follow various guidelines supplied by Argonne National Laboratory and the Department of Energy in return for the privilege of using their computer systems. Failure to follow these guidelines, or to use reasonable common sense in your usage of the computers, may result in suspension of your account. Example guidelines include:

  1. All activities must be done with professionalism and respect at the highest levels.
  2. You will not do anything that other users might reasonably consider offensive or abusive.
  3. The account given to you is for your use only. It is not to be shared with others; not your students nor other collaborators.
  4. You will not do anything that will or could compromise the security of the system. This guideline extends not only to the security of the system itself, but to the rights and privileges of others.
  5. You will do nothing that intentionally interferes with normal usage of the system by others.
  6. You will not remove your name from the information used by the "finger" command; in other words, you will not try to hide your identity. Nor will you place extraneous or offensive information in your finger file.
  7. You will not use the computer for commercial purposes or for any financial gain.
  8. You will not look at other peoples' files unless you get permission from them to do so. Just because the system allows you to read someone's files does not mean that you should.
  9. You should keep LCRC up to date on your phone numbers and (if available) off-site electronic mail addresses in case we need to get in touch with you.
  10. Accounts that are left dormant for extended periods of time are subject for archival and/or removal from the systems.  Your account may have an associated expiry date as well.
  11. While we do not actively examine files that users of the systems own, we do reserve the right to do so in case of problems, trouble, or other critical need.

If the boundaries of these restrictions are unclear to you, please contact systems@lcrc.anl.gov to discuss the issues. Failure to follow these guidelines, or to use reasonable common sense in your usage of the computer, may result in suspension of your account.

Please print and sign I, the undersigned, hereby agree to the policy above.
