LCRC Users,
What are we doing?
We will be moving our May 2020 maintenance day from May 11, 2020 to May 18, 2020. During this time, we will be switching over the LCRC environment to use Argonne accounts instead of separate LCRC accounts.
What does this mean to you?
After our maintenance is complete, you will access the LCRC accounts pages with your Argonne username and password. You will also access the clusters (Bebop and Blues) using your Argonne username as well. During this migration, we will also import all of the current SSH public keys that are in place for our active users so you should still be able to login if you have a valid Argonne account. Home and project directories and Slurm accounts will be updated to reflect your Argonne username if it is different than your current Argonne username. No files will be removed during this transition.
On the new accounts page, you will have the ability to add new SSH keys and change your current Shell. Both of these actions are now instantaneous and will not require an LCRC admin to install the changes going forward. Also, on these pages, you will be able to manage existing projects including allocation requests and request new projects just as before. We will also make sure the current project member lists are up to date with everyone’s Argonne usernames if they are available.
On Friday, May 15th, we will disable the current LCRC accounts pages (https://accounts.lcrc.anl.gov) so that we can take the time to sync all of the current data to the new environment. After we complete the migration, you can still access this URL for LCRC account needs, but you will be presented with a new user interface that integrates your Argonne account. Once this new page is live, we will also update our documentation to reflect the new account request and management processes at https://www.lcrc.anl.gov/for-users/getting-started/getting-an-account.
What do I need to do?
As a reminder, if you need continued access to LCRC resources after these changes are in place on May 18th, please make sure you follow ALL of the below steps BEFORE Friday, May 15th. If we don’t have an Argonne username for you before this time, there will be a delay in regaining access to LCRC resources. If you do lose access to LCRC unexpectedly after the 18th, please contact us.
For both Argonne and non-Argonne employees that already have an Argonne or Argonne Collaborator account, make sure that you enter and save your Argonne username into your current account page (https://accounts.lcrc.anl.gov/account.php) under the ‘Argonne Username’ text box before May 15th. We will be querying this field during the account migration. We will have no way to migrate your account to the new system if we don’t have your valid Argonne username and this may delay your continued access. Be sure that all new external LCRC account signups also apply for an Argonne collaborator account if necessary!
We are going to split out the details of the required action for Argonne employees and Non-employees (collaborators) below. Feel free to skip to the relevant section.
For Non-employees:
With the switch to the new environment, you are going to need an Argonne account, specifically an Argonne Collaborator Account. Non-employees will be required to have an Argonne Collaborator Account to login after May 18th.
The link to apply for an Argonne Collaborator account is at https://apps.anl.gov/registration/collaborators and is accessible from anywhere. You will need to use the official Argonne e-mail address of your Argonne sponsor. Your sponsor must be an Argonne employee. These Argonne Collaborator accounts are annual and can be renewed by the sponsor each year. More details on the account life cycle will be in the documentation on the LCRC website at a later time.
The process and policy for getting an account for Non-employees is fundamentally the same as it always was, but the interface looks a bit different. At the high level it remains:
- Visit the account application link (https://apps.anl.gov/registration/collaborators) and agree to the Computer User Policy.
- Specify who your Argonne sponsor is (must be an Argonne employee) and specify why you need the account.
- Fill out the account identity info.
- Sponsor will get notified and approve.
- Account will be created.
- Account comes up for renewal every year.
There are extra steps in there for foreign nationals, but that’s also the same process Argonne is currently following today.
Once you have your new Argonne Collaborator account, we need just a little more information from you to make the transition over. We plan to port over any LCRC accounts for non-employees that are active in our system. To do this, we need to ensure we can map your current LCRC username with your Argonne Collaborator username. In order to accomplish this, we ask that all users who want to carry over to the new environment follow these steps:
- Login to your current LCRC account at https://accounts.lcrc.anl.gov/account.php. If you forgot your LCRC password for your active account, please contact the CELS Service Desk at [email protected] for a reset.
- Scroll down until you find the text box to edit your Argonne Username.
- Either verify that this username is correct or replace the text value with your Argonne Collaborator username.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the webpage and press the button to Update Account Information. This will bring you back to the login page. Your account information has been updated – you can log out of the page without further action.
That’s it! Doing this will ensure that we can import your account into the new environment as long as your Argonne Collaborator account is active at the time of the migration. Please note that the current LCRC account webpage won’t do any verification on your newly entered username, so if you enter the wrong one, we won’t be able to map it initially and there may be a delay in your first login to the new environment.
For current Argonne employees:
Argonne employees should already have an Argonne account. If you’ve got an active badge, you likely have an account, and are entitled to one if you don’t already have one. It’s the same account you use to login to your Argonne e-mail account and other Argonne apps.
We plan to port over any current LCRC accounts for Argonne employees that are active in our system. To do this, we need to ensure we can map your current LCRC username with your Argonne username.
- Either verify that this username is correct or replace the text value with the correct Argonne username.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the webpage and press the button to Update Account Information. This will bring you back to the login page. Your account information has been updated – you can log out of the page without further action.
That’s it! Doing this will ensure that we can import your account into the new environment as long as your Argonne account is active at the time of the migration. Please note that the current LCRC account webpage won’t do any verification on your newly entered username, so if you enter the wrong one, we won’t be able to map it initially and there may be a delay in your first login to the new environment.
As seen above, non-employees will need a newly created Argonne Collaborator account going forward. Before the transition, please have your collaborators apply for an LCRC account as they do today AND apply for an Argonne Collaborator account at the same time. You can the invite collaborators via the Cyber Gate Pass app to apply for an Argonne Collaborator account. It’s best to get this as soon as possible to not delay their migration to the new environment. You will also approve, reject, and renew accounts in this Cyber Gate Pass app. The rules for sponsorship remain largely unchanged. You can find details on the Cyber Gate Pass application, rules and processes here: http://inside.anl.gov/tools/applications/cyber-gate-pass (internal access only). You may see a list of your sponsored accounts on the current LCRC accounts page. This feature will no longer be part of our accounts page going forward, so you can ignore this list today. All future sponsored account must be Argonne Collaborator accounts.
What else?
Again, please follow the steps above to ensure your continued access to LCRC as necessary. If you have already done this previously, you should be good to go. For continued access to LCRC resources after May 18th for those who have an account today, we will send out another message with instructions after the migration is complete. Any new LCRC users that need an account after the 18th will be able to follow our updated instructions that we send out at that time as well.
A change of this size to the LCRC environment will not come without issues. If you find yourself having trouble accessing any files or submitting jobs or any other unexpected issues to your workflow, please let us know after this transition is complete and we will assist you as best and as quickly as we can. We appreciate your patience on this matter.
Lastly, if you have any further questions or issues, please contact [email protected].
Thanks!
